An exposition of morphing identities
As I float in saltwater, I am carried.
I am both preserved and eroded.
As it dries on my skin in the heat of the sun,
it leaves a thin cover,
until it falls away, grain by grain.
The last of it, I wash away.
Come morning,
I will step once more
into the ebb and flow
of my saltwater self.
Saltwater invites us to consider the many selves that make up a single identity. An exposition of the constant negotiation between those selves: their capacity to unite as one coherent whole and, just as quickly, to interrupt, undermine, and unravel one another. Saltwater is a tribute to the selves we preserve, those we erode, those we return to, and those we leave behind.
